The Rolling Epidemic of Motorcycle Accidents

Richard Abi-Rached, HMR Regional National Sales Manager

There are over 100,000 motorcycle accidents a year…and motorcycles are not getting any safer. Motorcycles don’t have airbags, a rider is protected by only what he is wearing, and many motorcyclists don’t wear helmets.

In 2016, motorcycles made up 3 percent of all registered vehicles in the US. Yet motorcyclist fatalities accounted for 14 percent of total vehicle fatalities.

Motorcycle accidents often involve very serious injuries, including:

  • Head trauma
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Broken neck
  • Degloving

In 2016, 5,286 people died in motorcycle accidents, up 5.1 percent from 2015, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In 2016, motorcyclists were 28 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash per vehicle mile traveled, and almost 5 times more likely to be injured.

Motorcycle Accident Medical funding

When a motorcyclist wakes up in the hospital, their first question is often how they will pay for their medical bills. Despite the passage of the Affordable Care Act, many people do not have health insurance. Many others are under-insured with insurance that doesn’t cover all of the post-hospital care they need. Still others have thin coverage with high deductibles, leaving them with huge out-of-pocket costs.

This is where plaintiff medical funding makes a big difference. HMR Funding offers funding services that may help plaintiffs in their time of need. HMR Funding purchases medical bills from their medical providers and agrees to wait to be paid until the end of the legal claim. HMR Funding works cooperatively with plaintiff’s counsel to provide an organized copy of the medical records and to resolve the lien.

HMR Funding specializes in catastrophic cases, which many funding companies avoid. All too often with motorcycle accident victims, they are so badly injured that they cannot work and may need around-the-clock medical care.

Our company will typically purchase medical bills from a medical provider at an agreed upon rate, and send the medical provider immediate payment. As a medical funding company, we will actually purchase the receivables – the medical debt — from the medical provider. We will do so in exchange for a lien on the settlement or verdict in the personal injury case. HMR Funding will take the payment risk and we understand the long-term window involved in a case settling or reaching a verdict can be many months or years.

Again, we don’t get paid until the case settles or reaches a positive verdict.

Working with a full service medical funding company, like HMR Funding, is a win-win situation for all parties involved. An injured rider gets the medical care they may need.  The medical provider is paid promptly for their services; and the attorney can focus on fighting for justice for his client.

Motorcycle accidents often happen in three scenarios

  • Intersections: They occur most often at intersections, where a car is turning left in front of an oncoming motorcycle.
  • Backing out: Accidents also take place when a driver backs out of a driveway into traffic without looking, and cuts off the rider.
  • Stopped traffic: Crashes also occur in heavy traffic where two lanes of traffic are stopped, and a car pulls out from a cross-street and drives in front of a motorcycle rider.

There is a rolling epidemic of motorcycle accidents

Over a 10 year span, NHTSA shows the number of motorcyclists age 40 and older who were killed in crashes increased by 12% from 2007 to 2016. And ranks the following as the top 10 states with the most motorcycle deaths:

  1. Florida with 555 motorcycle deaths
  2. California with 529 motorcycle deaths
  3. Texas with 458 motorcycle deaths
  4. Ohio with 178 motorcycle deaths
  5. North Carolina with 176 motorcycle deaths
  6. Pennsylvania with 174 motorcycle deaths
  7. South Carolina with 168 motorcycle deaths
  8. Georgia with 167 motorcycle deaths
  9. Michigan with 141 motorcycle deaths
  10. Illinois with 139 motorcycle deaths

The fatality rate per registered vehicle for motorcyclists in 2016 was six times the fatality rate for passenger car occupants, according to NHTSA. There is a very real need for automobile and truck drivers to keep an eye out for motorcyclists.

Many riders do survive accidents, and many will need help paying for their medical bills. For those who do, HMR Funding will be there.
